WELCOME TO OXFORD INSIGHT MEDITATION

Due to Covid-19 we have moved our events online, for more information on our online retreats and meditation groups please see What We Offer. See also Online Meditation Resources for information about other online meditation groups and courses.

Oxford Insight Meditation offers an opportunity to explore the life-transforming practice of meditation in a welcoming and supportive environment.

We offer a programme of silent day retreats in Oxford, led by experienced teachers associated with Gaia House, a retreat centre in Devon, as well as occasional courses and regular groups for meditation practice.

Our retreats and groups are open to people aged 18 and over. Beginners as well as those with more experience of meditation practice are welcome. You do not need to have any particular beliefs or think of yourself as a Buddhist to participate in our retreats and meditation groups. If you have any health concerns you may wish to check with your GP before participating.

We welcome people irrespective of religious or political beliefs, ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, ability and culture. We aim to create a safe and welcoming space for all who wish to come and practice with our community. We believe the path of awakening and the benefits of meditation should be available to all.

WHAT IS INSIGHT MEDITATION

“Insight Meditation (or Vipassana, translated as ‘seeing deeply or clearly’) is the practice of developing a calm and mindful investigation into the nature of experience, leading to wisdom, compassion and the end of suffering”.

Insight Meditation practice begins by calming the mind, usually through bringing a gentle awareness to the body and the sensations of the breath. Through being present in each moment, our heart and mind can awaken to a depth of peace and clarity, which allows grasping, judgement and fear to fall away.

Derived directly from the teachings of the Buddha, meditation has a deep and immediate relevance to life today and its benefits for wellbeing are increasingly confirmed by scientific research. Find out more about Insight Meditation here.
